THE ARTIST
LAB

Commercial artist development for the next generation of performers.

Move. Sing. Perform.

A high-energy performance program for young artists aged 8 to 16 who want to train beyond the traditional dance class. A Base 181 Dance Studios program.

Coming 2027  ·  Ages 8–16  ·  By submission and/or audition

This is not another dance team.

Today's commercial performers need more than great technique.

They need to move, sing, connect with an audience, perform to camera, work with microphones, retain choreography, understand formations and bring personality to the stage.

THE ARTIST LAB is inspired by pop artists, commercial dance, live entertainment and music videos. Rather than training dance, vocals and performance as separate skills, students learn how to bring them together.

Learning choreography is one thing. Performing it while singing live, working a microphone and staying connected to the audience is something completely different.

All 3

Move, sing and perform. At the same time.

The 3
pillars

Three skill sets, trained together every week.

Move.

Commercial dance training built for performance.

Students develop the movement skills needed for today's commercial performance world.

Training may include

  • Commercial choreography
  • Hip hop and jazz funk
  • Musicality and freestyle
  • Formations and transitions
  • Learning choreography quickly

The goal isn't simply to execute choreography. It's to learn how to perform it.

Sing.

Contemporary vocals built for live performance.

Students develop their voice while learning how to use it in a real performance setting.

Training may include

  • Contemporary and pop vocals
  • Vocal technique and breath control
  • Harmonies and group vocals
  • Microphone technique
  • Singing while moving

Students won't just learn how to sing a song. They'll learn how to perform it while moving.

Perform.

Learn how to command the stage, screen and room.

Great performers don't simply know the choreography. They know how to make people watch.

Students develop

  • Stage presence
  • Camera confidence
  • Energy and projection
  • Artist individuality
  • Professional rehearsal skills

This is where movement and vocals become entertainment.

Where it all comes together.

This is the biggest difference. Students don't learn these skills in isolation. They learn the vocals. They learn the choreography. Then the microphones come out, the music goes on, and they learn how to do both.

Students learn how to

  • Sing while moving
  • Transition between vocals and dance
  • Perform with microphones as part of a group

Experiment. Take risks. Find your style. The Artist Lab.

THE ARTIST LAB should feel different from the moment students walk into the room. They're encouraged to create, take risks, use their voice, develop presence and build confidence.

Train. Create. Perform.

Built from real commercial experience.

THE ARTIST LAB is inspired by real experience in the Australian commercial entertainment industry.

Justice Crew began as a dance crew before winning Australia's Got Talent, signing with Sony Music Australia and becoming one of Australia's most recognisable urban/pop groups. They came from dance, then had to learn vocals, microphones, live shows, camera and touring. THE ARTIST LAB turns that journey into training for the next generation.

Parent
information

Quick answers to the things parents ask most. Anything else, just send a message.

Who is it for?

Young performers aged 8 to 16 who:

  • Love performing and are drawn to commercial dance and pop culture
  • Want to explore vocals as well as movement, including singing while dancing
  • Want stronger stage presence and more camera confidence
  • Enjoy performing as part of a group
  • Are ready to be challenged creatively and develop their own performance identity
Do students need to be strong in every area?
No. Some students will be stronger dancers, some will connect naturally with vocals and some will have incredible stage presence. The program is designed to identify those strengths and develop the areas around them.
Is this musical theatre?
No. Not musical theatre. Commercial performance. THE ARTIST LAB isn't built around musical theatre repertoire or traditional triple-threat training. The focus is the commercial entertainment world: pop, commercial dance, live shows, music videos, stage and screen.
How is it different from Company and Elite?

It sits alongside the existing pathways at Base 181, with a completely different purpose.

  • Company (Dance Performance): for dancers wanting choreography, team experiences and performance opportunities.
  • Elite (Advanced Dance Development): for dancers wanting higher-level technical and performance training.
  • THE ARTIST LAB (Commercial Artist Development): for performers wanting to develop across dance, vocals and commercial performance.
How much training is there?
Weekly Artist Training runs for 1.5 hours every week. The Term Lab is an extended session once a term. Performance projects are developed throughout the year.
What happens at the Term Lab?
It's designed to feel closer to a commercial rehearsal environment, with more time, more detail and more performance. Sessions can include full performance rehearsals, microphone work, singing while dancing, staging, camera training, filmed projects, music video concepts, freestyle, artist identity, styling, guest coaches and special projects.
How do I join?

If your child loves commercial dance, music, live performance, singing, cameras and the energy of being on stage, THE ARTIST LAB gives them somewhere to explore all of it. Not just as a dancer. Not just as a singer. As a commercial performer.
