WHAT WE'RE ABOUT
WHAT WE'RE ABOUT
Welcome to Base181 Studios, where dance is not just about the steps; it's about culture, beats, and fostering inspiring leadership and growth through movement. Since our establishment in 2016 by the dynamic duo, Samson Smith and Chantal Curmi, Base181 Studios has become the go-to hub for dance education in a myriad of styles, including Hip Hop, Jazz, Breaking, Acrobatics, and performance arts.
Our mission is simple yet powerful – we want each student to believe in their flyness and conquer their shyness. This guiding principle is at the core of everything we do at Base181 Studios. We started this studio with a vision – recognising a gap in the dance education landscape where true Hip Hop and Breaking styles were not being taught. Our goal was to create a space for kids to dance, not just a studio but a haven of teamwork, creativity, and positivity, free from competitiveness.
At Base181 Studios, we specialize in immersing students in the diverse world of dance, blending commercial styles with current trends. It's more than just learning dance steps; it's about building a culture that molds dancers into socially confident leaders. We instill a growth mindset and cultivate an atmosphere that is not only educational but also uplifting, friendly, and fun.
Beyond dance education, Base181 Studios embarks on a journey integral to early social development. We strive to harmonise dance, growth, and leadership, creating a path filled with amazing experiences and lasting memories. Join us at Base181 Studios, where every dance step is a step toward building confident leaders and fostering a lifelong love for movement, culture, and growth.
Studio Director
Chantal Curmi was a professional dancer who has performed on stage alongside greats like Kylie Minoque, Ricky Martin and Geri Halliwell, just to name a few.
Along with this incredible feat, Chantal was also a regular dancer on Australian TV shows such as The Voice, Australia’s Got Talent and The X Factor. Dance allowed Chantal to travel, tour and perform on many stages worldwide.
Being a Master Trainer from the Institute of Fitness Australia and having a certificate IV in performing arts from Urban Dance Centre, Chantal is highly qualified to teach others.
Having a passion for helping others and building confidence in the community puts Chantal ahead of the rest.
Her solid commitment to her students is evident as they grow, lead and fearlessly work toward their dreams. For Chantal, this is the biggest achievement of all.
Creative Director
Samson Smith is a dedicated artist who has worked as a youth worker for over two decades, assisting and mentoring young people from all walks of life though dance.
Samson began his dance career at an early age, his movements and talents earned him the opportunity to represent New Zealand at Battle of the year in Germany at age 12. Since he has toured the world to represent Australia at the World Hip Hop Championships, finishing 13th overall.
Samson is a member of Justice Crew, an Australian hip hop music group that won the fourth season of Australia's Got Talent. Justice Crew rose to fame with great success as they launched their debut single "Boom Boom," which reached number one and was certified six-times platinum.
They made Australian history by debuting "Que Sera" at #1 on the ARIA Singles Chart for 9 weeks in a row. Samson has traveled the world with Janet Jackson on her 'Number Ones Close & Personal Tour,' One Direction’s 'UP All Night Tour,' Chris Brown’s 'F.A.M.E Tour,' Pitbull’s 'Planet Pit World Tour' and Jay Sean’s ‘I'm All Yours Tour.’
Samson has always had a passion for teaching and sharing his love of dance, and he was motivated to share his expertise by founding Base181 Studios a highly successful hip hop studio, and now his own hip hop curriculum, Lil Groovers. Samson created Lil Groovers to give Studio Owners the support to grow their hip hop community with integrity, knowledge and ease.
The first of it's kind, Samson acknowledged the importance of preserving the vibrant culture and technique of street dance.

Testimonials
We LOVE Base 181! Our boys have so much fun in their classes, our 8 year old has definitely found his "happy place" at Base 181. He's grown not only in skill but in confidence too. He is excited for every single class and knows its a place he can truly be himself. Our Preschooler also loves the Lil Groovers program, he now will randomly start break dancing whenever he hears a great tune pumping. Thanks Base, you're stuck with us 😊😎

Base 181 has such a fantastic influence on my naturally shy son. He is non stop dancing around the house and keen to show off his newly acquired skills to anyone who wants to see it. Chantal and Samson have created a culture in which students feel supported, safe and anyone's successes are celebrated. Cooper is Benji's fave though. when I asked him what he wants to be when growing up he said 'Cooper. he is so cool, and kind and smart'
I highly recommend the little Groovers to anyone out there.
